Elective Affinities VIII

I must be one of the few people who actually liked The Counselor (here is one more). This Corot painting, with its overt sexuality, masked under superficial mythological guise, reminded me of both the cheetahs in Ridley Scott’s film, as well as their ruthless owner, portrayed by Cameron Diaz, who – unlike the languidly reclining nude – aggressively incarnates sexual power. For better and for worse.

I haven’t seen the film, but I read the review in the link, and it sounds intriguing. I like the comparison with the painting. It always fascinates me how you find these, you must have an encyclopaedic knowledge of art.
Best wishes from Norfolk. Pete.

I don’t know, I guess it works both ways: films remind me of paintings and vice versa. I came across this Corot by accident, and the association with Scott’s film was immediate. Scott is also very visual (come to think of it, the most ‘successful’ post on this blog is the one on The Duellists), and I would not put it past him to have been inspired by actual paintings, as he reportedly did for The Gladiator (I have to post that example one day).

The Duellists post was my personal favourite too. I absolutely love that film.
